Is AzaSite® well tolerated? Are there side effects?

AzaSite® is generally well tolerated; however, as with any prescription medicine, there can be side effects with AzaSite®.

In clinical trials, the most common side effect was eye irritation, which occurred in 1% to 2% of patients. Other side effects (occurring in <1% of patients) were burning, stinging, and eye irritation upon instillation; skin irritation or rash; corneal erosion; dry eye; altered taste; nasal congestion; eye discharge; inflammation of the cornea; and sinus infection.

Important information

  • AzaSite® is to be used as an eyedrop only.
  • Do not allow the AzaSite® applicator tip to touch the eye, fingers, or other surfaces.
  • Stop using AzaSite® and contact your healthcare provider if any signs of an allergic reaction occur.
  • Although it is common to feel better early in the course of therapy, it is important to use AzaSite® exactly as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Skipping doses or stopping too early may make the treatment less effective.
  • Do not wear contact lenses if you have signs or symptoms of pinkeye.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before using AzaSite®.

AzaSite® (azithromycin ophthalmic solution) 1% is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (pinkeye) in adults and children 1 year of age and older.

Recommended dosing for AzaSite® is 1 drop twice a day for 2 days, followed by 1 drop once a day for the next 5 days, for a total of 9 drops per infected eye.
